Limara

Remember it? No… not the product… THE advert of all time!

Limara body spray or shampoo or something, whatever it was, was totally eclipsed by the advertising which was pretty spectacular.

OK, I was a pubescent schoolboy at the time, and this was the early 1980s, but I swear just about every red blooded rock loving kid I knew was in love… with the cartoon character they used in the ad!

She had it all – and she emerged from a pond/waterfall, still wet, to a pounding rock song (‘Remember My Name’) and she walked purposefully (nay, sexually) to a distant castle where her obviously pretty lucky lover was apparently awaiting… phew… even thinking about it now sends me back to a time when spots ran amok!

Well, I can’t find the advert itself (oh please tell me you’ve got a copy somewhere…) but I did happen across the song…

Stevie Vann Lange website

Remember My Name, indeed – could hardly bloomin’ forget it! And here I am nearly a quarter of a century later still pining over a cartoon girl – talk about the ultimate fantasy chick!

Hi! I’m glad I’m not the only one to remember the ad with fondness!

Hope your daughter (and her family) is doing well, and wish her every happiness with her first child… and to you as the prospective grandparent, too!

Hi ‘Limara’ – thanks for your comment. I am still looking for the video for the ad – if it ever turns up I’ll post it here for you to see what all the fuss is about.

I don’t know if there is a definition of what Limara means, but suffice to say it was a body spray from the 80’s, that is still available in some countries (African and Dutch, mostly it seems). Why they chose that name I don’t know, but the character in the animated sequence was incredibly attractive to 15-year-old (at the time) boys! Now I’m a good deal older than that, all I have is a fond memory of it 🙂

Hi Limara (the 3rd!) – thanks for the info on the name… I hadn’t tracked down the origins of it, so that’s very useful.

As for the advert – I am happy to say that I know a man who has got the footage! Yes, I really do!

However, it is not for public viewing, which is a shame. I’ve requested a copy for some animation workshops that I am involved in, and we’ll be able to watch it there, but not able to put it on the web. As soon as it arrives I’ll post a comment on the site here and let everyone know. Hopefully it will be the same footage as I remember… 🙂

hi, my name is also Limara, and like you, i was named after the bodyspray! apparantly, the name Limara, is meant to be greek, after a Greek godess called Amara, who symbolises beauty! I’m trying very hard to find clips of the advert, but have had no luck, as I would really like to see it!

LOLOL! Yeah – Friends reunited has got a lot to answer for! All those memories (of pretty girls?) now all shot to hell as the reality of our age and the baggage of our lives gets documented ever more deeply, revealing just who we are… sigh… 🙂

    Yep – Stevie Lange…

But have you seen the video footage of the advert recently? I even contacted some of the companies who might have been involved, but so far nothing but dead ends. It would be so cool to have a copy of the ad!

Can’t help you with the advert Hal, sorry (I don’t even remember it, though it sounds as if maybe you needed to be male to remember it quite so explicitly :-)), but a great site for reminiscing old adverts is http://www.tv-ark.org.uk/ – though it doesn’t do for making us feel any younger I suppose, the Smash adverts were nearly 30 years ago…

Blimey – I was about 22 then!… Kind of makes you 17 now.

You don’t happen to resemble the girl in the ad do you? You’ll make some bloke very happy if you do, I’m sure!

I’ve still not found a copy of the ad, nor any pictures or graphics from that time to help hunt it down. Any chance your mum has got any info or leads?

Quite seriously – I am particularly interested from a film making point of view apart from anything else… I’ve even contacted the cosmetic companies and ad agencies, but no luck there, either 🙁

Hi Limara – I’ll dig those details out over the weekend and post them on the site here or on a new post.

If you are anywhere near Chelmsford in Essex then I could arrange a screening… but it will be a very short one! I’ll see what I can do with the footage.

Hello again, only me, Limara the 3rd! I can’t believe you actually have a copy of the advert? I don’y suppose you fancy making another copy that I could buy from you?

I only wish I could. I did promise that I would only use this footage for educational purposes. I see no reason why you couldn’t also ask for a copy, though! I’ll dig out the contact details for you and post them here as soon as I can 🙂 I was offered the footage as VHS or for a small fee (30 Euros, I think) I could have got a digital version.

The footage is about 20 seconds long and is exactly as I remember it… although the impact on me (given my age now) seems somewhat less than it was when I first saw it!

Hiya! I don’t live near Chelmsford in Essex, pity as i would have definately come over for a screening of the advert! don’t forget to post the details, thank you sooooooooooooo much!

    Oh Yes!

With many, many th Oh Yes!

With many, many thanks to Thorsten Finke from Biersdorf AG!

Biersdorf AG are the company that own Limara… Thorsten contacted me after I sent them another email to tell me that he had found the advert in the corporate archives.

I am now sitting here with a VHS copy of the advert in my grubby hands!

And yes, I’ve played it, and yes, it’s *the* advert… and yes, it is as I remember it – but somehow the intervening passing of the years makes a bit of a difference when I watch it now!

‘scuse me while I disappear down memory lane for a day or two 🙂

OK – here you go – rather than post the email address on this site, which is a bit too public and could attract a lot of spam, send me an email directly:

hal dot maclean at btinternet dot com

I’ll send you the contact details as soon as I get that.

I don’t know how else to do it… I don’t want to compromise anyone’s privacy.

hiya, thanks for the reply. I can’t believe you’ve found
the footage to the advert, well, you know someone with it! I’ve never
seen it, my mom had taped it to show me when i was old enough to appreciate it, but my dad taped over it!!! typical!!!

anyway, if u do get a copy, i WOULD love to be able to view it. I’ve heard so much about it and find it so frustrating that i’ve never seen it.

    Hello,

Just stumbled across this website after typing my middle name on google. My parents named me after this body spray and advert in 1981. I have always wondered what the advert was like as I assume it must be pretty awsome to inspire people to name their children after it!
Can’t believe their are so many others named after this too, I would love to see the ad or here the song should anyone know of how to obtain this I would be very greatful!
Nice to read your comments and learn about my name after so long!!!

Hi Hayley – welcome! Yes, the advert is gaining a bit of cult status for sure, and certainly seems to have inspired a lot of folk.

I have a VHS copy of the advert which I use to teach about animation and short story telling, so I’ll try to at least get some stills from it online very soon.

The advert had a song called ‘Remember My Name’ sung by Stevie Vann Lange, and you can hear a version of that from her website .

You can see the advert here…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8teg_V-dHZc

It’s at the end of a commercial break consisting of Paul Hogan for Forsters Lager, the L’Oreal Studio Line gel stuff, Chum dog food and finally the version of the ad with the castle and the sleeping prince.

I remember three of the varieties were Yellow Moon, Oriental Garden, Green Summer but I can’t remember the other three. You can still buy the stuff in Holland but I have no idea if it smells the same.

Hi Limara… welcome! Just to make me feel really old, in 1983 I was in secondary school doing my ‘A’ levels in 6th form. The advert remains one of the best examples of animation and music from those times, IMO. Glad you like it too 🙂

I was born in UK but moved to Australia when i was only 15mnths old, i have never come across someone with my name. When i was in school a teacher from south africa told me that Limara was a flower in the african forrest and it means “flower of the sun” and that they actually used that flower in making the scent for the spray. I am also so sick of never being able to get anything with my name on it!! Love this blog… i dont feel so lost!!!
